Wheelchairs Are Getting Better Every Day

Any time you head out to purchase a new wheelchair, there are a lot of decisions that you will have to make, and you should be glad of it. Back in the earliest days of mobility chairs, moving people around was pretty much the entire function they were designed to perform. There was little thought given to comfort, ease of use, or personal need. These early chairs on wheels were straight and hard, and the people using them must have suffered on a daily basis, because little was provided in order to accommodate their disabilities or make them bearable to sit in for hours on end.
Times have changed, however, and now there are hundreds of different models of both power and manual wheelchairs to choose from equipped with thousands of different features to make you comfortable and give you more mobility than ever before. No matter if you're only looking for a chair for occasional use, such as trips to the store, something to just use around home, or a heavy-duty model that was designed for rugged outdoor use, you will have a multitude of options.
It used to be that wheel chairs were basically one size, and that one size was supposed to fit all. It didn't matter if people were short or tall or if they had a spinal curvature or other disability that affected their ability to sit in the chair, they had to use what was available or lay in a bed. These chairs were huge, stiff-looking, black models that looked more like torture devices than they did therapeutic seating. It wasn't until the late 19th century that people started trying to design mobility chairs that would better meet the needs of those using them.
Now, if you feel like racing smoothly around in a chair with red stripes, you can do so. If you need to operate a chair using a joystick instead of having to operate the wheels with weak muscles, you can do that, too. Chairs come in graduated sizes for children all the way up to very tall adults and have wide padded seats and backs as well as features that can be adjusted and moved in order to give you the best ride of your life.
